Root into Writing 2 With Robyn Moreno

Welcome to Root into Writing II:
A Six-Week Guided Writing
Course
“Story is powerful medicina. For most of our lives, someone else has written our narratives. Writing our stories is our soul retrieval.
Rooted where you are now, what is the new, true story you can write?
You are holding the pen. You are the poet; your life is the poem.”
—Robyn Moreno, Get Rooted
Writing is a form of channeling, conjuring, dreaming, and healing. I believe we are all writers and seers, storytellers and poets, documentarians and observers of this thing called Life. We all have stories that live inside of us.
It’s time to tell yours.

Syllabus, Fall 2025
—Week One: Starting the Journey, What's Your Question?
Consciously or unconsciously, most writers set out on a journey to answer a question. What brought you to this class? What is the question you are trying to answer? We’ll read excerpts from different authors and use prompts to uncover our (or our characters’) guiding questions, so our work can begin to unfold (and our voices emerge) as we write towards finding an answer.
—Week Two: Setting the Scene, Creating Our Worlds
Orientation is important in life and literature. Where are we? We begin by exploring place, time and mood in our writing. We’ll read literature, awaken to the environment around us through mindfulness activities and sensory engagement, and visit our inner and outer landscapes to help find our (and our characters’) places on the map, and begin to create vivid and transporting worlds on our pages.

—Week Three: Developing Characters, Finding Voice
In this class, we’ll work side by side with first and third person narratives across both fiction and nonfiction to help establish which device is best for you. This exploration can allow you move deeper into more personal pieces and awaken voices inside of you didn’t even know you had.

—Week Four: Flower Songs, Playing With Poetry
The ancient Mexica (Aztecs) called poems “flower songs” and held them sacred. We’ll read poetry across time and cultures to shape our own flower songs. We’ll explore rhythm, rhyme, and repetition and try them in our poetry to see what feels right—and what doesn’t. Prose writers can learn to use poetry to help them sharpen their imagery, rhythm, syntax, and sense of surprise. This is a fun and exploratory class that invites more play into our writing.

—Week Five: Dialogue, Saying It Out Loud
Dialogue shows and tells about our characters through their voices. We’ll examine different types of dialoguing to unearth authentic voices—do people really talk like that? And examine what’s left unsaid (the silences, expressions, and body language) to build story tension and reveal plot.

—Week Six: Revision, Revision, Revision
Deleting, editing, adding, clarifying, analyzing word choice, we’ll use published works and famous authors’ personal notes to examine the paramount tool of revision to see how they got from here to there. And in our final session, we’ll share our work out loud with the group at large to practice the arts of witnessing and of receiving loving feedback.
